Orpheus to Perform at Ridgewood's Kasschau Shell on Tuesday, June 28

Orpheus Club Men's Chorus will perform as part of the Kasschau Memorial Shell 2022 Concert Series in Ridgewood, NJ.

Our performance will be Tuesday, June 28, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. All performances in this series are outdoors, and are free and open to all.

Attendees may park at Veterans Field or the Ridgewood Library. Directions.

In case of rain, please check the Kasschau Memorial Shell website after 6 p.m. on the day of the concert.

The repertoire will include solos by our pianist and assistant conductor, Ron Levy, and by our music director, John J. Palatucci.

The chorus will perform:
  • Salutation ("Hail, Friends of Music!"), words and music by Wm. P. Bentz.
  • Stout Hearted Men, words by Oscar Hammerstein II, music by Sigmund Romberg.
  • A Red, Red Rose, words by Robert Burns, music by James Mulholland.
  • De Animals a-Comin', Negro spiritual, tune and text as rendered by Maginel Wright Barney, arranged by Marshall Bartholomew.
  • A Place in the Choir, words and music by Bill Staines (1947-2021), arranged by Erica Phare-Bergh.
  • Desperta Ferro, words and music by Christopher Fox, based on an Almogàver battle cry.
  • Seventy Six Trombones, words and music by Meredith Willson, arranged by William Stickles.
  • The Longest Time (doo-wop group), words and music by Billy Joel, arranged by Roger Emerson.
  • Jamaica Farewell, Jamaican folk song arranged by L. M. House.
  • Not While I'm Around [from Sweeney Todd], words and music by Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021), arranged by Robert Page.
  • ​You'll Never Walk Alone, words by Oscar Hammerstein II, music by Richard Rodgers.
  • America, the Beautiful, lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates, music by Samuel A. Ward, arranged by Ladislas Helfenbein.
  • ​We Sing As One, words by E. Andrew Mills, music by Richard Lane.

Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus Spring Concert Features Scholarship Winners

Orpheus Club Men’s Chorus’ spring 2022 concert, with the theme Music Springs Eternal!, featured performances by the club’s two scholarship awards for 2022, high school seniors Yoona Park and Margot Jerkovich. 

The concert was held Sunday, April 24 at First Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, NJ.

Ms. Park, a violist, played Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise from “Fourteen Romances,” Op. 34 (1915). Ms. Jerkovich, a soprano vocalist, sang Paul Simon’s Bridge Over Troubled Water (1969). 

Other highlights of the concert included: 

  • Pianist Ron Levy’s rendition of two pieces by William Grant Still, Summerland from “Three Visions” (1936) and Dance from “A Deserted Plantation” (1933). 
  • The world premiere of America Singing by composer Roger Stubblefield, based on text by Walt Whitman, featuring soloists Mitchell Shapiro (tenor) and Sam Shaw (bass).
  • A doo-wop performance of The Longest Time, with words and music by Billy Joel. Shapiro and Lou Fucito were tenor soloists. The other singers in the doo-wop ensemble were Vernon Reed, Bob Husband, and David Strife (tenors); Richard Rehbein and Peter Bernich (baritones); and Ed Brouillard (bass).

    The Orpheus Club Men's Chorus is a singing force for good throughout the greater New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. It comprises men who love to sing, enjoy the company of like-minded men, and perform with a sense of service to the larger community.

    Orpheus was founded in 1909 in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and is the oldest cultural institution in Bergen County.
